Aurlandsfjord

The municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane is home to a fjord known as Aurlandsfjord. An offshoot of Sognefjorden, Norway’s largest and deepest fjord, is the 29-kilometer-long Aurlandsfjord. This fjord is both deep and narrow, with a maximum depth of roughly 962 meters below sea level and an average width of less than 2 kilometers. The Naeoyfjord splits off to the west from the main fjord about 11 kilometers south of the fjord’s mouth at Mt. Beitelen. Located at the very mouth of the Aurlandsfjord is the small community of Flam. Two other small villages, Aurlandsvangen and Undredal, can be found along the fjord, in addition to Flam. Be prepared to experience spectacular scenery, fjordside settlements, and hidden attractions across the region, as everything feels like a living museum.

Cruising Aurlandsfjord

Taking a cruise across the fjord is a great opportunity to see it from a first-hand perspective. The environment is characterized by many wild and spectacular waterfalls and rivers that flow down from the steep mountains and through the deciduous and coniferous woods to the fjords. In addition to the impressive natural scenery, the area is dotted with picturesque communities that have maintained a cultivated environment complete with remnants of historic farms and mountain pastures and unique cultural monuments.
