Cruising to Narvik, Norway

Narvik, Norway

Narvik, also known as Áhkanjárga, is the third-largest town and municipality in Nordland county, Norway, and is located on the banks of the Ofotfjorden. Narvik is a small, easy-to-navigate city. The tourist information office is located on the main street, and the railway station is also easily accessible. The city is located on the southern bank of the Ofot Fjord and serves as the administrative center for the Ofoten district. Narvik is surrounded by magnificent mountains and is ideal for mountaineering and skiing.

Narvik has several outdoor activities available. Narvikfjellet, Narvik’s ski resort, is the best-known place in northern Norway for extreme and alpine skiing. It features one of the highest drop heights in Scandinavia and great off-piste skiing conditions. Narvikfjellet offers spectacular views of the Ofotfjord; from the top, it appears as if you’re skiing right into the fjord.

There are lifts and floodlights on several of the slopes. There is also a cable car to Fagernesfjellet, which offers a breathtaking view and the opportunity to hike even higher into the mountains. Mountain hiking is highly popular in the area, and there are also mountain biking trails. Or, even better, climb it late at night during the summer. There is a magnificent trail that climbs up the mountain overlooking the city and leads to the same location as the cable car.

If you want to see the northern lights, the late fall and winter/early spring skies in Narvik are unusually clear, making it ideal for viewing this phenomenon. The midnight sun is visible from the end of May to the end of July.
