Riga is also known for its wooden buildings, art nouveau architecture and medieval Old Town. The pedestrian-only Old Town has many shops and restaurants and is home to busy Livu Square, with bars and nightclubs. UNESCO World Heritage Site Riga is famous for its Old Town and city center, in which over 800 buildings are of the Art Nouveau style of architecture. From the spire of St Peter’s church, you can see how the city spreads out from the old town, through art nouveau extravagances, to Soviet apartment blocks, skyscrapers, bridges and the Eiffel-esque TV tower. The enormous Central Market is a treasure trove of earthy sausage, cheese and black bread, smoked fish, and much more.
