Hellesylt

The historic Viking village of Hellesylt is located at the head of the Sunnylvsfjorden, a branch of the Storfjorden, from which the more famous Geirangerfjord branches nearby. Hellesylt is a little community of just over 500 people known for its stunning waterfall that runs through the heart of the port.

Hellesylt waterfall

Walk out onto the bridge that spans the Hellesylt waterfall, which runs through the heart of town. The white water is especially powerful in early summer, when melted snow from the mountain range runs down.

The waterfall is one of the most beautiful places in Hellesylt and one of the most photographed motifs in the area. The falls divide Hellesylt in two, giving the small village a distinct feel. Akerneset, a mountain overlooking Hellesylt, is slowly eroding into Sunnylvsfjord. A collapse could result in a tsunami that destroys most of downtown Hellesylt.

Traveling to this place will provide you with some breathtaking sights because you can see the pouring water from above. In addition to the waterfall, you should stop at the church for a view of the mountains and the fascinating fjords. Beautifully renovated old farmhouses are strewn throughout the hills and mountains, many in daring and difficult settings.
