The town of Vik is on the southern coast of the Sognefjord, which is one of the longest fjords in the world. Located in the ancient district of Sogn, on the southern bank of the Sognefjorden, Vik’s administrative center is the settlement of Vikoyri. The Vik area has roughly 2,800 residents who work in agriculture, industry, and various trades and services.

Vik is a great place to start exploring the spectacular high-mountain landscape that stretches from Vikafjellet to Voss and Flam. Within walking distance of the port, Vik has a variety of activities, shops, and cafes. Try the locally produced Gamalost cheese, which has Viking origins. The Silver Ring Walk connects you to some of the city’s most notable landmarks, including Hopperstad Stave Church and the historic Hove Church. In the latter half of the 12th century a Stave Church was built at Hopperstad and a stone church at Hove. Both churches are renovated and are used by villagers and tourists. The Hove church was private owned and indicates Hove being the home of chieftains with great wealth.
