Cruising to Storstappen Island, Norway

Storstappen Island, Norway

The Gjesvaerstappan island group, right off the North Cape, consists of high, steep-sided, grass-covered islands located north of the settlement of Gjesvær in Nordkapp Municipality in Finnmark County, Norway. Storstappen, Kjerkestappen, and Bukkstappen are the three main islands.

Storstappen island is one of the three main islands of the Gjesvaerstappen chain, which is located in the far north of Norway. It used to be populated, but it is now permanently abandoned and has been a protected nature reserve since 1983. The islands, which are home to a large colony of seabirds, have been recognized as a natural reserve. The largest colonies of cliff-breeding seabirds are mostly found on the bird cliffs of the largest island, Storstappen, which is closed to visitors between June 15 and August 15.

Witnessing nature’s overpowering magnificence is an awe-inspiring experience. Puffins, auks, razorbills, and guillemots crowd the crenelated ledges of the 928-foot-tall Storstappan cliffs, buzz-bombing back and forth between their nests and the sea.

Kjerkestappen island reaches a height of 166 meters above sea level. There were people who lived on the islands in the past, and there was a church on Kjerkestappen.

Bukkstappen island stands 92 meters (302 feet) above sea level.
