Much of Amsterdam can be explored on foot, allowing tourists to take in views like the unique gables atop each home, the houseboats adorned with potted plants, and the vibrant floating flower market. The canal alleys of Amsterdam, lined with trees, have a magical, enchanted feel. Although hotels, flats, and restaurants have opened up behind the gabled townhouses, the aesthetic of this lovely old city has changed little since its 17th-century Golden Age. Everything from diamond cutters to world-famous museums and art galleries can be reached on foot in the tiny old city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and living museum. Outside of the canals, there are many interesting attractions, scenic walks, and historic sites in Amsterdam.
