Lofoten is a group of islands located north of the Arctic Circle in the county of Nordland, Norway. Between the mainland and the Lofoten lies the open Vestfjord. With its postcard-looking small fishing villages nestled in fjords, dotting a very rugged coast with abrupt peaks rising directly from the ocean, the archipelago is often described as one of the most scenic parts of Norway. Despite its far-north location of the Arctic Circle, archipelago experiences one of the world’s largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude. Even the winters are relatively mild in Lofoten Islands because of the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. Lofoten has a strong connection to the Viking Age, and at Lofotr Viking Museum you can experience the Viking Age as it really was. At Borg, archaeologists have discovered the largest Viking longhouse ever found from this era. The building is 83 metres long and has been reconstructed as a living museum.
