Andalsnes, a village on a fjord, is a fantastic jumping-off point for a variety of hikes and outings, from gentle strolls in the woods to quick ascents to breathtaking vistas. With the snowy mountains in the background and the Romsdalsfjord in the foreground, this city boasts an amazing backdrop. It’s a terrific jumping-off point for hikes up to the Romsdalsfjella mountain.
The Alp town by the fjord
Located at the terminus of the Rauma Scenic Railway from Dombas, Andalsnes is a little town surrounded by beautiful fjords and mountains. Fjords, valleys, and breathtaking mountain ranges have all been sculpted by glaciers whose paths have shifted over time. The Hjorundfjord Glacier and its numerous tributaries carved the Sunnmore Alps. The Sunnmore Alps are unique among mountain ranges because of their majestic mountains and alpine rock formations. The peaks, which reach altitudes of 1500–1700 meters, jut abruptly out of the ocean.
Rauma train line
An excursion on the Rauma Railway is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see one of Norway’s most breathtaking landscapes. Each way on the Rauma Railway from Andalsnes to Dombas takes 1 hour and 40 minutes and operates four times a day, every day of the year. Once on board, all you have to do is relax and take in the passing landscapes as you take in the sights via the train’s enormous windows. Famous landmarks like the Kyllingbru Bridge, the Trollveggen Cliff, the magnificent Rauma River, and the Romsdalen Valley may all be seen from your window seat.
Romsdalen Valley
For a good portion of your trip, the stunning, emerald-green River Rauma will be right outside your window. The river’s personality is ever-changing, from a calm current past white-sand beaches to a raging waterfall plunging down rapids at high speed. This section of track runs through some of the most breathtaking and remote countryside in all of Norway.
Rauma Rock Festival
Every year in August, Andalsnes plays host to one of the major Rock Festivals in all of Central Norway. With the towering Romsdal Alps as a background, the festival presents a weekend of dynamic pop and rock, spanning from high-energy rock ‘n’ roll to more laid-back sounds.
